An open letter to Democrats from a Bernie supporter

Dear Democrats, yes, all of you:

There have been a lot of articles on the internet recently addressed to one camp of Democrats or the other. The Bernie folks and the Hillary folks seem to be miles apart in rhetoric; and many online discussions between members of the two groups end in insults and condescension. There have also been cries for unity within the party from patriots who are wisely fearful of all this in-fighting. Considering the fact that American TV’s biggest narcissistic asshole somehow shined…

Oakland’s future flood problems, or: How I learned to stop worrying and watch downtown Oakland...

Dinosaur enthusiasts get to ponder one of geology’s great mysteries; what was the cataclysmic event which began the end of the dinosaurs? Was it a giant meteor hitting the Earth? A build-up of so much air-borne volcanic ash from seismic activity, that the world was in darkness for years? Was it a plague or a new kind of pest? Was it an ice age? People in Oakland may now get to enjoy the dubious honor of watching the single cataclysmic event which turns their city from a charming bayside metropolis into a…

How my accordion got stolen and how I got it back in six weeks

2016 has been a very exciting year already. My band Whiskey and Women has already recorded three songs for our next album. In my rush to empty my storage unit, and to prepare for my full-on transition to living in Hamburg, the unthinkable happened: my…

Soaked in Blues

It’s New Year’s day in 2016 and I just dropped my German husband off at San Francisco International airport. I’m missing him instantly, the international love-lifestyle probably seems romantic to most people, to me it’s like getting used to heartbreak and trust, and missing your family, and just dealing with that pain a lot. The pain isn’t any less painful after a few years but it’s easier to deal with. Maybe it’s something that we musicians share with soldiers…

Where do you go when you have a broken heart…

A Busking Adventure in Altona, (Hamburg, Germany)

It’s 5:30 AM on Sunday, November 8th, 2015. I slept hardly a wink, listening to a very musical rainstorm come in and out, happily cuddling my Ingo. I know what I have to do to go to sleep; I went busking yesterday, and dragging my gear around town, plus playing accordion for a few hours always make my neck and back and hands sore. All I need to do for sleep is to take a little pain medicine and stretch out on the floor, doing gentle twists and yoga poses for an hour. But tonight the air feels different. My…
